Daphne Press has acquired a fantasy duology from Elizabeth May pitched as Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone (Orion Children’s Books) meets Marjorie Liu’s Monstress (Image Comics).

Publisher Daphne Tonge acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, in a two-book deal from Danny Baror at Baror International. Rights have also been sold to DAW in the US. To Cage a God, the first in the series, will be published in January 2024.

May has previously written the Falconer trilogy (Orion), co-authored the science-fiction Seven Devils duology (Orion) and has written romance novels under the pseudonym Katrina Kendrick. To Cage a God is May’s first return to fantasy in over five years.

Tonge says: “I’ve been a long time fan of Elizabeth’s writing, and I was immediately drawn into the world of To Cage a God. It’s got an incredibly strong voice and concept. Readers will find it impossible to put down! It’s an incredible honour to publish To Cage a God and relaunch Elizabeth May as an outstanding new voice in (romantic) fantasy publishing.”

May added: “I’m beyond excited to collaborate with Daphne on To Cage a God. She’s shown me so much support throughout my career, and I’m thrilled to partner with the Daphne Press team on this new journey into romantic fantasy. This story explores the bonds between sisters, the complexities of love, duty, and the fire of revolution—all set against a backdrop of divine power struggles and ruthless politicking. I owe everything to my readers, and I hope you’ll join me for this next adventure.”
